VAF REVIEW -2006 saw the end to 3 years of funding from the Voluntary Action Fund and a few of the students were involved in making a video, reviewing the benefits the students had experienced with the mentoring project and learning new skills such as interviewing, using a video camera and also the importance of sending evidence to the funders. CAMCORDER GUERRILLA’S – The students visited a cinema in Edinburgh to see a film on the war in Iraq, which featured Rosie Gentle, whose son was killed while on duty in Iraq. GIANTS EXHIBITION – The Pilton project in Edinburgh had an exhibition highlighting the experience people with disabilities have to endure in their daily lives, the students from Bothkennar attended the closing exhibition, which was held in Edinburgh. LONDON – Two of the students who were involved in the Get Heard movement, which highlights poverty in Britain, visited London along with people from all over the United Kingdom to speak with MPs about the problems people face who live below the bread line. A conference was also held at the Scottish Parliament where the views of people were heard. LEARNING NETWORK EVENTS – Two learning network days were held in Falkirk for Falkirk communities and a learning network event was held in Alloa for Clackmannanshire communities. The learning network is for people from community groups in regeneration areas to get together to tell each other about issues in their communities, share information and hear from support networks. Short taster sessions were held on conflict resolution, forum theatre and creative community engagement. NEW HOSPITAL – Some of our students visited Sunnyside primary school to find out what was happening about the new hospital, which is to be situated in Larbert. FUNDING – A day was held in Perth for a funder enterprise exhibition and three of our students went along to see what funding is available to the organisation. GARDEN - Members took part in creating a mosaic for the garden, which has the CTDU logo along with the fair-trade logo, linking hands is also a symbol on the mosaic showing the friendship we feel for each other and for people around the world, a boat and some flowers are also featured which represent the garden project we have been working on. IT TRAINING – Students took part in a number of training days learning new skills using computers, which were held in Denny Community Flat and the CLiCK centre in Alloa. Several students also received IT training at Bothkennar. RECYCLING – A day was held at Bothkennar with a guest speaker from Action Recycle who also gave us ideas on how to recycle old plastic drink bottles and turn them into bird feeders and how to cut carrier bags into strips and weave into place mats for your tables. RSPB – Students enjoyed an educational walk led by the RSPB, followed by a BBQ to end the summer programme.
