Janette's story . . . .

I started going to CTDU about two years ago. My friends Elaine and George told me they were doing a drama about mental health issues and invited me to join them. I have been troubled with my mental health all my life, so I am very passionate about the subject. So when I heard that CTDU were doing this drama because there were other people wanting to do it, I wanted to get involved.

I joined in the project a few weeks after it had started, but everyone at CTDU made me very welcome. The week I joined we went to Edinburgh to meet a community drama worker called Gavin. We all spoke about what we wanted to have in the drama. The main issues were the closing of mental health beds and a new programme for people with mental health issues called IHTT, which stands for Intensive Home Treatment Team. We called our story ‘Amy’s Story’, and you can download her story right here on my webpage.

We contacted different mental health organisations in Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmannanshire and asked if we could come and perform our drama and speak to people who were going to their projects. We made a list of questions to ask people (you can download our questions here). We collected the views of 55 people, and from that we produced a report about what people thought about the IHTT, and we made a banner. I hope we will take the banner to the Scottish Parliament so that they can hear through the banner what the people we met had to say about the IHTT service. I think the banner is brilliant, and I hope I can do more like this in the future with CTDU.

I enjoyed the computer training with Rosemary and learned a lot through doing that. We used the computer to help us with our research and I also made a calendar with Amy’s story using some of the pictures we had taken during our project.

Before I went to CTDU I was very depressed and this helped me to put my points forward without feeling intimidated by anyone. CTDU is great.

I’ve just started a 16 week course at Stirling University. It’s an introduction to doing further education and I’m enjoying it.
